New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection

Green Acres Program Local Government and Nonprofit Assistance Land Acquisitions and Park Development

Funding Amount: For urban aid areas, Green Acres offers, 75% matching grants and 25% zero-interest, 30-year loans for land acquisition and 75% matching grants and 50% zero-interest, 25-year loans for park development. Funding cap is $1M. Assistance to nonprofits available as 50% matching grants. In June 2017, $33M was awarded to 42 development projects; Total requests equaled $75M. Jersey City was recommended for $1M for Berry Lane Acquisition.

Eligible Applicant and Activities
Eligible applicants include: Local government and nonprofits.

Eligible activities include: Funding assistance for park development projects that result in increased public use and enjoyment of outdoor recreation areas. Recreational facilities that may be funded include, but are not limited to, facilities that provide boating, fishing, swimming, outdoor games and sports, biking, picnicking, camping, or nature interpretation.

National Park Service

Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program

Project Type: Planning, Design
Funding Type: Federal

Funding Amount: Technical assistance to help implement a project.

Eligible Applicant and Activities
Eligible applicants include: Community groups, nonprofits, tribes, and state and local governments.

Eligible activities include: Community-led natural resource conservation and outdoor recreation projects.

Funding Cycle and Application Deadlines
Applications are due on June 30. Applicants are encouraged to consult with National Park Service staff about their proposal at least 30 days prior to the application deadline to ensure that the assistance is appropriate for your proposal and that your application is the best that it can be.

Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance (RTCA) Program

Project Type: Design
Funding Type: Federal

Funding Amount: Technical Assistance

Eligible Applicant and Activities
Eligible applicants include: State and local agencies, tribes, nonprofit organizations, or citizen groups

Eligible activities include: Under the National Park Service, the RTCA program assists community-led natural resource conservation and outdoor recreation initiatives. RTCA staff provide guidance to communities on: conserving waterways, preserving open space, and developing trails and greenways.
